Extended Single Crochet Mesh

This is a stitch that I learned 25 years ago from a pattern book published in the 1970s.  I've never seen this pattern stitch anywhere else. It's fun and easy to do, and I love the drape, texture, and almost woven look. Once you get the hang of it, you can pretty much do it by feel. I used it to make a shawl that I still love.

Extended Single Crochet Mesh:

Pick a hook that's a little bigger than you would normally use for the yarn you're using. The vertical bar between stitches is from making a chain stitch and then drawing up a loop, so be careful not to pull that tight as you work.

Special Terms:

Extended Single Crochet Two Together (esc2tog):  Draw up a loop in or under each of the next 2 sts, being careful not to pull the yarn tight, (yo, pull through 2) twice.

Ch and odd number

Row 1: Esc2tog in the 3rd and 4th sts from hook, *ch 1 (do not skip a stitch for the chain!), esc2tog in next 2 sts. Rep from * across, 1 dc in last st. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as a st), esc2tog in next st and under the ch loop next to it, *ch1, esc2tog. Rep from * across, 1 dc in last st. Turn.

Rep row 2 as desired.

The result should look like the following picture, with esc2togs lining up over each other:

This swatch was made with light worsted weight wool and a size I (5.25 mm) hook.

Extended Single Crochet Mesh Variation:

With this variation the vertical bars line up over the esc2togs and vice versa. The resulting fabric is slightly less open than the previous pattern stitch.

Over an odd number of stitches,

Row 1: Esc2tog in the 3rd and 4th sts from hook, *ch 1 (do not skip a stitch for the chain!), esc2tog in next 2 sts. Rep from * across, 1 dc in last st. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 extended sc and 1 ch), *esc2tog on either side of the verticle bar under the ch1 of the prev row, ch1. Rep from * across, ending esc2tog. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as 1 extended sc), *esc2tog on either side of the verticle bar under the ch1 of the prev row, ch1. Rep from * across, until 3 sts rem.  Esc2tog, dc1. Turn.

Rep Rows 2 and 3 as desired.
